Wonderful weekend

It's already a while ago that I write something on my blog, but here I am!
I started my week not very well, I was sick and spend almost two days in bed and / or on the toilet ...
But the rest off the week went well. I had to present my experiments for my bachelor thesis for the first time and I think the physics teacher, Sokhany and Stefaan were satisfied. For me it was good that I had some feedback, coming week I can do some changes.

Before I knew it was Friday! I've been invited to go to Kampot with some English friends, they are really nice!
We had a taxi at 6:30 pm and after a nice drive we arrived in Kampot around 9:30 pm.

We stayed in Olly's place, in the middle of the nature and next to the river ... So nice and quiet over there!
Befor sleeping we went to Boeddha's villa, a bar/ guest house close to Olly's place. There was some nice music and a cozy atmosphere ...

After a good night in Olly's place, some friends went back to Phnom Penh with the bus. But I decided to stay and rent a motorbike to see some more beautiful places. I went to Kep with the motorbike, it toke me a while because I stopped a lot to take some pictures. It was so beautiful over there! When I arrived in Kep I went to the sealing club and watched the sea and the beautiful view.

Than I met some of my English friends in Led Zep, a quiet bar in the mountain after Kep. There you can see the entire bay, it was amazing!   

After we find us a place to stay we went to eat some seafood. I ate for the first time in my life real crab, and it was fantastic!! I'm still thinking about the crab :) I think I never enjoyed my dinner so much!
After some nice wine it was time for my bed in a lovely lodge.

Unfortunately it's Sunday already ... so time to go home. First I had a quick side seeing along the seaside and had breakfast on the beach with my feet in the water ... (so nice!)
It was time to go back to Kampot where I had a taxi (with 7 adults and 3 kids) instead of a bus :) everything is possible in Cambodia! Love it!

I had a WONDERFUL weekend and I hope to have more of these!!!

First lesson

Thursday, Februari 16th I had to give my first Physics lesson.
I prepared my lesson well, but still I was very nerveus the day before.
Luckily that evening I was able to skype with my mom, who calmed me, thanks mama! :)

Finally Thursday morning. Get up early, to be on time at school.
The first group that I had to teach was a group of 32 students, their subjects are Physics and Mathematics.
The second group was much smaller, only 15 students, they are studying Physics and Chemistry.

My lesson was about hydrostatic pressure. I had a lot of experiments in it and the students realy liked that.
The experiments where very easy, so they can also use them in their own lessons.

The experiment where they must blow into water and oil was very nice!

 My first experiment went well, so the nerves where already disappearing. One of my other experiments was the one with the tube and the card on. It was a long search to find the right tube, but by cutting some syringes, I managed to have the right tube :)

At the end of my two classes I had a good feeling. Also Stefaan, Sokhany and the students were satisfied.
So finally the nerves were not necessary...

Valentine's day

It's already a little bit late, but still ... Happy Valentine's day!
Tuesday morning I surprised my colleagues with a little Valentine's present.

Even ontspannen

Nadat ik donderdag namiddag mijn studenten van biologie ben gaan observeren heb ik een frisse duik genomen in het zwembad. Het zwemmen was echt super ontspannend. Ik had er nood aan om even aan sport te doen, want veel achter mijn bureau zitten is niet zo goed voor mijn spieren enzo...
In het begin van het zwemmen voelde ik me precies een vis in een bokaal. Iedereen keek naar me ... een beetje vreemd maar het went wel ;)

Toen ik thuis kwam van het zwemmen ben ik samen met mijn Engelse roommate en haar vrienden hier naar lady's night geweest. Dat was in een wijn bar en je kon er heerlijke wijnen krijgen voor 1,5 dollar. Het was gezellig en zeer ontspannend!

De lessen waarnaar ik ben gaan kijken waren volgens mij wel goed. Maar het is echt zo anders dan bij ons. Leuk om eens mee te maken, maar jammer dat alles in het Khmer is en dat ik er niet echt veel van begrijp. Af en toe was het ook wel wat chaotisch, daarom dat ik wel nood had aan wat ontspanning en stilte in het zwembad ;)

Amai, het is weeral vrijdag. Ik ben hier al bijna twee weken, de tijd vliegt echt. In de voormiddag hebben de bio studenten en ik samen modellen van de verschillende soorten ademhaling gemaakt. Het ging af en toe niet zo snel vooruit waardoor het wat meer tijd in beslag nam dan ik had verwacht, maar we hebben toch redelijk deftig werk geleverd.

Toen ik vrijdag thuis kwam van het werk had ik even wat heimwee, maar door papa dan te horen is dit snel weer weg gegaan. Merci papa! :)
's Avond ben ik met Chloe (engelse roommate) gaan eten en dan zijn we naar enkele bars geweest met de rest van de vrienden. Twas geestig! Leuk om die bars te leren kennen, en der zijn der hier veel ze !! ;)

Meeting practicum students

Yesterday I had the meetings with my practicum students. In the morning I went to Sereipheap high school to see the 4 students I have to work with for Biology. I think they are really great! Today I worked already 3 hours with them and it goes very well! They are creative and have some good ideas. They are also very friendly and polite. I think we will have a great time together.

Yesterday afternoon we went to meet my practicum students for Physics in Kampong Kantuot high school. They are also very nice. The practicum for Physics is starting next month. So first I have to work together with the Biology students and next month with the students for Physics. I'm looking forward to it!

After Kampong Kantuot we visited one of the poor schools around here, I would like to buy some school supplies, lab materials, ...  for this school with the money I collected from my cookies.

Together with the Biology students we did some nice work already! We made a model of the alveoli. It's ready to use in the first lessons tomorrow! Good luck!


 

The first week

If I want to, I can write a book about my first week, but I'll keep it as short as I can :)
So on Monday I had the day off to sleep long and explore Phnom Penh a little bit.
I went by tuktuk (a very nice vehicle over here) to the area around Royal Palace. The road to it was already impressive! I didn't went to Royal Palace because I want to do that some other day when I have more time.
I went back to my guest house by motodop (also a very nice vehicle over here :)

On Tuesday my first week at VVOB Kandal started. Meetings, introductions with the very nice and friendly VVOB team, explore the school, meet the Director, ... and of course, already begun with preparing some lesson plans, making manuals, ...
To see my planning, I will certainly not be bored!
The RTTC (Regional Teacher Trainer Center) of Kandal is a very nice and big school. I think I'll certainly like it here!

Also on Tuesday after work, I pulled my courage together and I went for renting a motorbike. I don't know if I mentioned, but the traffic here in Phnom Penh is really indescribable! But I have to drive more than 10 km to my work so a moterbike is certainly necessary.
Renting the motorbike was no problem! Driving the motorbike .... ;)
My first trip from the motor shop to my guest house took about an hour (normally it's 10 minutes ... ) I just rode along with the rest of the traffic (go with the flow), without watching the way home ... but eventually I get home. So the next few days: practice, practice and practice ! :)

On Thursday I find a room to rent near Russian Market. It's in an apartment together with a Kenyan guy and a Britisch girl (Cloé). I think they are very nice! I already went to Nerd Night together with Cloé and some friends of her.

Saturday was my moving in day. I've installed well and than I went to Russian Market. Waw! Amazing! So many stalls, so close together, so many different products under one roof ... You can really get everything over there!  On Sunday I went visiting the Olympic Stadium and did some shopping at the Sovanna Shopping mall.

So I think I've done quite well for my first week (and I've written as short as I could) !

Vertrekkens klaar

Zaterdag 28 januari was "The day".
Om 16u18 had ik in Brussel-Zuid mijn TGV richting Parijs, daar had ik mijn vliegtuig rond 19u 20 naar Bangkok en dan nog een laatste vluchtje van Bangkok naar Phnom Penh.

Voor ik kon vertekken moest er natuurlijk nog heel veel gebeuren. Ik had examen tot maandag 23 januari. Na mijn examen nog even genoten van het uitgaans leven in Gent ... en dan focus op mijn vertrek.
Donderdag voor mijn vertrek had ik nog een kleine afscheidsdrink gepland. Het was gemakkelijk voor mij, dan kon ik iedereen van mijn vrienden nog eens zien voor ik voor 4 maand naar het verre Cambodia vertrok.

Vrijdag 27 januari (... nog 1 keer slapen ...)

Het plan was om vrijdag namiddag mijn bagage te maken. Dit was ook gelukt maar ... De optische bank moest er nog in. Ik had de opdracht gekregen om een optische bank mee te nemen naar Cambodia. Het VVOB wilde die zo snel mogelijk daar krijgen, dus hem mee geven met mij was de snelste optie. Wat een gedoe om alles in mijn valiezen te krijgen ... maar gelukkig is het gelukt (wel met extra bagage maar het kon niet anders).

Vrijdag avond nog lekker uiteten met het gezin. Nog even genieten van onze heerlijke belgische keuken :)
Eindelijk zaterdag ... Afscheid nemen van de familie was erg zwaar voor me maar het hoorde erbij. Mijn oma's gingen mee tot in Brussel om me uit te zwaaien. Dit vond ik erg sterk van hen! We zijn met zijn allen (ouders, zus, en oma's) met de trein naar Brussel gegaan. We kwamen mooi op tijd aan. Om 16u gingen we samen naar het perron. Iedereen veel knuffels geven, ... de tranen lieten we stromen ...
16u18 het fluitje voor vertrek, en we zijn vertrokken!

Veilig en snel aangekomen in Parijs. Daar verliep het ook vlot, tot ze zagen dat ik een extra bagage mee had ... ze deden daar wat moeilijk over, maar door ervoor te betalen was het opgelost. Ik kon eindelijk door de controle, had ik daar dan mijn ticket niet verloren ... maar gelukkig kreeg ik snel een nieuw. Oef... op het vliegtuig. Amai zo groot! Na een aangename vlucht van 11uur ben ik veilig geland in Bangkok.

Met enige vertraging vertrok ik met een mini vliegtuigje richting Phnom Penh. Visa aanvragen in Phnom Penh verliep vlot, niet dat ik veel kon zeggen want niemand van de 20 controle agenten kon Engels...
Toen ik eindelijk uit de luchthaven was stond Stefaan me op te wachten. Ik ben blij dat ik er veilig en wel geraakt ben, en al mijn bagage ook!

Het was ongeveer 16u30 (plaatselijke tijd) toen we in de auto door het chaotische verkeer van Phnom Penh reden. Amai wat een verschil! Het verkeer hier is echt niet normaal! Enorm veel brommers en echt wel de wet van de sterkste, hoe groter je auto hoe meer voorrang je hebt. Moet ik hier ook met de brommer rond rijden??? De armoede hier op straat viel me ook meteen op. Onderweg kwamen we ook al enkele mooie tempels en gebouwen tegen. Ik verlang al tot ik hier alles kan verkennen en kan leren kennen.

Tijdens mijn eerste avond in Phnom Penh heb ik ook al meteen Khmer food gegeten. En het beviel me :)
Morgen heb ik nog een dagje rust gekregen, dus moet ik pas dinsdag beginnen met mijn stage.

De reis zit er op, ik ben veilig en wel in Phnom Penh geraakt, mijn stage, avonturen, ervaringen, ... kunnen beginnen!

Hi, I'm Griet I'm 21 years old and I live in a small village called Zwevegem. 

I'm a Belgian secondary school teacher trainer at the Arteveldehogeschool in Ghent.

The subjects I chose for my teaching practice are Physics and Biology.

At the end of septermber 2011 I was told that I could do my internship in Cambodia, for me it was a dream come true. 

I'm very glad that I got the chance to pick up this life experience!
